Sock Tragedies

Lynette: So much has happened in the last month. I’ve had a few triumphs and tragedies. Today, I want to focus on a tragedy.

Whether you’re a fast knitter and can crank out a pair of socks in a week or a slow knitter who cranks out a pair of socks once a year, it’s always sad when a good project comes to a terrible end.

RIP: Knit in 2006 – Felted in 2008

1st tradegy: I thought the yarn was superwash, but I don’t blame the yarn. Since I took the time to knit my socks, then I should have taken equal time to care for them properly. I had stopped handwashing my socks a while ago. I’d throw them in the cold wash and let them air dry, which is precisely what I did with this pair. I think this sock tragedy happened because of aggitation.

2nd tragedy: There’s no long story here. You read it above. However, I really should have known better in this case. This yarn was Cascade 220 NOT superwash. I washed them in cold water and when I removed them from the washer….. Need I say more?

On Life Support: Knit in July 2008 – ?

3rd tragedy? I think the washer was hungry in this case. Or it could have something to do with the toe method I used, Star Toe. It calls for knitting until there are 8 stitches left then you draw the remaining stitches through with yarn. I guess I didn’t draw it tight enough. However, I was able to salvage the carnage and will reknit the toes traditionally using the kitchener method.

Knit in Nov. 2008 – Life Expectancy (we’ll see)

Let this be a lesson to all of you. Take care of your hand knit socks and they’ll take good care of you.

maybe you need to check your washing machine and make sure it’s actually using COLD water when you select it? those look like maybe the machine decided to substitute HOT water.

i have never had a single problem with my handknit socks being machine washed in cold water and I’m not even using the same washing machine each time (given I don’t have my own!!).

Been there. Done that. But to be fair the two pairs I have like that were supposed to be superwash, but there was a faulty batch of the yarn pre-dyeing that wasn’t made superwashed correctly (the maker graciously sent me two replacement skeins gratis!). I will likely make handwarmers out of them, though, so they won’t be all for naught!
